Taking better photographs

I am often asked to help people with photography – from school children through to enthusiastic amateurs to professional photographers.

PRIVATE LESSONS

I am able to offer individual lessons in photography to help you get to understand your camera better, and inspire you in taking better photographs through education and coaching.

I usually suggest an initial lesson of 1.5 hours so that we can really get to grips with whatever equipment we are using, and I can go through how to achieve your vision in the photos you are taking. This involves practical exercises as well!

After that, I set homework and sometimes it’s useful to have a series of lessons booked so that you can practice, come back to review your progress with me and then develop your knowledge and application of photography.

WORKSHOPS

Workshops are a great way to learn the art of photography. Often we have a group of 8-12 people with different kit and a different knowledge of photography, which adds to the melting pot of creativity.

Often these workshops are on how to take better photos in nature. I cater to a range of experience and technology, from smart phones to DSLR uses.
I structure them over a three or four hour period (depending on location and the availability of tech), and include instruction, inspiration and getting out there to do focussed exercises. Everyone comes away with a keener eye and some great photos, inspired to take more!

MENTORING

If you are considering the leap from amateur photographer to turning pro, then it may be an idea to invest in a mentoring program. As a Fellow at the British Institute of Professional Photographers I have the experience of working with other professionals at the highest levels, assessing qualifications and judging both national and regional awards. I enjoy working with fellow photographers to bring out the best in them, mentoring photographers to achieve their aims of greater skills and qualifications.

Taking on a Mentor is a very personal decision, and is not right for everyone so I’d be happy to have a cuppa and a chat about whether I can help.
